What does it mean to create for Lithuania while living thousands of miles away?
Vladas Jakubėnas was one of the most significant Lithuanian composers of the 20th century. Forced to flee Lithuania in 1944, he spent much of his life in exile, in Chicago. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the composer’s death, the Lithuanian Evangelical Reformed Church in the USA and the “Dainava” Lithuanian Chorale invite you to rediscover his music and remember this remarkable figure. The concert will feature music by Jakubėnas, performed by pianist Dainius Vaičekonis (Seattle), violinist Linda Veleckytė Aglinskienė (Chicago), guitarist Petras Aglinskas (Chicago), pianist Lisa Kristina (Chicago), and the Dainava Lithuanian Chorale (Chicago), led by artistic director Darius Polikaitis.
This will be not only a tribute to an eminent composer, but also a testament to the fact that Lithuania can live in our hearts and in our creative work, no matter how far away from it we may be.
