January 23, 2010--7 p.m. Lemont High School Performing Arts Center 800 Porter St., Lemont, IL The “Dainava” Lithuanian Chorale presents “Sąskambiai” (Accord) - music for choir and birbynė, a traditional Lithuanian wind instrument similar to the reed-pipe. The concert features Darius Klišys from Lithuania and Chicago’s own “Dainava” Lithuanian Chorale, directed by Darius Polikaitis. Klišys specializes in the performance of Baroque music on the birbynė, and in April of 2009, was one of 90 musicians selected to perform at Carnegie Hall with the YouTube Symphony under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas.
Tonight, birbynė and choir join forces to present works by Lithuanian composers Bajoras and Tamulionis, as well as masterpieces by Palestrina, Pergolesi, Handel, and Rutter. The evening also features works by budding Chicago area composers Kęstutis Daugirdas and Martynas Matutis, and culminates with the world premier of “Švilpynė” (The Whistle) by Lithuanian composer Nijolė Sinkevičiūtė.
